Robots for uterine and rectal surgery

Accuracy and security

In the field of surgery, precision and safety are fundamental pillars. In order to optimise these characteristics in long-term interventions that require internal manipulation of the uterus and/or rectum, at Bumerania we have developed a project together with a Spanish reference hospital for a robotic manipulator that aims to revolutionise this field.
This system, designed to be placed in front of the natural entrance of these organs, has the main objective of replacing the presence of a second surgeon, thus optimising the use of health personnel and reducing the time of the interventions.

A technological breakthrough for technological breakthrough for surgery:

The project supported by Bumerania has tested two handling systems: one based on Cartesian axes and the other with a UR3 robotic arm. After evaluating both, the latter has been chosen, incorporating various technological advances to ensure its efficiency and safety.

To facilitate intuitive control of the manipulator, a haptic device has been integrated, allowing the surgeon to feel the force and resistance of the tissues. In addition, a force sensor has been incorporated to measure the interaction between the tool and the patient, ensuring safety during surgery.
In order to improve the efficiency and precision of suturing, a voice control system has been developed that allows the surgeon to direct the robot’s movements by voice commands.

Objective

The robotic manipulator is intended to assist surgeons in long-term interventions involving internal manipulation of the uterine and/or rectal apparatus.

A compact and versatile design:

To facilitate the mobility of the manipulator in the operating theatre, a small-format base has been designed to allow it to be moved easily. In this way, the surgical team can adapt the system to the specific needs of each operation.

Bumerania: committed to the future of Health.
The development of the Bumerania robotic manipulator is just one example of the company’s commitment to the healthcare sector. Bumerania continues to research and develop new technological solutions that contribute to improving medical care and people’s quality of life.

Next steps:

The project is in the development phase and is not yet available for clinical use. However, it is expected that, after conducting a study at the Fundación de Investigación Hospital General Universitario de Valencia to evaluate its effectiveness compared to traditional surgery and obtain approval for health use, this innovative system could revolutionise uterine and rectal surgeries, improving their efficiency and safety.
Bumerania is promoting this project with great potential to transform uterine and rectal surgery, optimising healthcare resources, reducing intervention times and improving the precision and safety of sutures. Its development opens a promising path towards a more efficient and safer future in the surgical field.
